Why Every Business Needs to Be Online – A Real-Life Example
The other day, I had an urgent issue with the electrics in my house and needed an electrician fast.
The house was rewired about eight years ago by a fantastic tradesman—friendly, reliable, knew exactly what he was doing. Naturally, I wanted to get back in touch with him.
But could I find his phone number? Not a chance.
In the time since he did the work, I’ve had a few different phones, changed networks, and somewhere along the line, his contact details got lost. No handwritten address book to fall back on—because let’s be honest, who still uses those?
So I did what most people would do: I Googled him.
Nothing. No website, no business listing, no Facebook page. It was like he’d vanished off the face of the earth.
Now, I’m a web person, so I wasn’t going to give up easily. After a bit of digital sleuthing, I eventually tracked down his number. He came out, fixed the problem, and all was well again.
But it made me realise something really important:
If he had a website or even the most basic online presence, I’d have found him in seconds.
Most people aren’t going to go to the same lengths I did. They’ll give up and move on to the next person who does show up in search results.
The takeaway?
If you’re in business—any kind of business—you need to be online.
Even a simple one-page site with your name, services, and contact details can make all the difference. It’s not just about looking professional—it’s about being findable.
Because people change phones. They lose numbers. They don’t keep business cards or scribble names in notebooks anymore.
They search Google. And if you’re not there, you’re losing out to someone who is.
